“I am thrilled to see my installation of Cube Chair at the Grove,” said artist Tim Smith, Cube Chair creator. “I think the specific location will make it very visible and start meaningful discussions. I am grateful to the Grove for welcoming the chair and I’m excited to see what locals think.”

Funding for the Sculpted Cube came from various sources, including a significant contribution from Smith himself and the donation of an art pedestal in the Grove from Park Central Development. Thanks to these generous contributions, the Sculpted Cube has reached full funding and will be placed on the corner of Manchester Ave. and Sarah in the Grove on Friday, October 18th, 2013.

“Park Central Development, a community development corporation, is pleased to bring to the Grove community the addition of this art installation,” said Project Manager Gelinda Connell of Park Central Development. “The installation of “Cube Chair” at the art pedestal will add a dimension of whimsy, contemplation and fun to the Grove, an art centric entertainment district in St. Louis.” She added, “Park Central Development thanks Rally St. Louis for this opportunity and we look forward to the experience of having this piece in the neighborhood.”

Smith believes the Cube Chair is about relationships, but isn’t necessarily a commentary on them. He describes it as a space where a person can explore their relationship with themselves, with others and with the world around them. He then added, “I chose Rally St. Louis to represent me because of their goal of placing unique ideas to improve the artistic content of St. Louis. To elevate St. Louis on a national level, compared to other major cities nationwide.”

Smith, born and raised in St. Louis, will be holding an unveiling ceremony on the corner of Sarah and Manchester Ave. at 6pm on Friday, October 18th.

How Rally Saint Louis Works

  • Anyone visiting RallySTL.org can submit an idea for how to market the region. There is no set formula: From campaign slogans to beautification projects to highlighting a favorite cultural destination.
  • Residents can then vote for their favorite campaign ideas, and those ideas receiving the most votes from the crowd will proceed.
  • The Rally budgeting committee, comprised of individuals from companies and agencies in St. Louis then set a budget and resources needed to complete the project.
  • The budgeted ideas are then moved from voting to the funding stage. If someone likes an idea and wants to see it executed, they must donate small denominations to see it come to fruition.
  • If a project reaches funding goals, it will be executed by a St. Louis-area partner. Ideas that do not reach funding goals in 90 days are removed from the site.
